Not Just an Ensemble. A Community.
CoroAllegro is an auditioned chamber ensemble based in Wilmington, Delaware. We welcome singers who are passionate about choral music and ready to make a commitment to creating exceptional music together.
Questions, answered
Who should audition?
If you love to sing, we encourage you to reach out!
Our singers come from many backgrounds and stages of life. Some have been singing with CoroAllegro for decades; others are newer to the ensemble. You don’t need to be a professional singer to belong here. What matters most is your musical ability, your commitment, and your desire to be part of a community that takes the making of music seriously.
What happens at an audition?
You don’t need to prepare anything. Our Artistic Director, David Simmons, provides everything needed for the audition. There is no need to choose a solo or spend weeks worrying about what to bring.
What about sight-reading?
We do require sight-reading during private auditions with our artistic director.
What is the time commitment?
CoroAllegro rehearses Tuesday evenings for two hours during our September–November and February–April seasons. Members also practice independently at home or, if they choose, with private instructors.
Creating a CoroAllegro concert is a significant commitment. Between rehearsals and independent practice, each singer invests about 50 hours in the making of each concert, twice a year. Consistent attendance and preparation are important because every voice contributes to the ensemble.
I haven’t sung in years. Should I audition?
Yes! CoroAllegro includes lifelong singers as well as people who have returned to choral singing after time away. If singing is something you love, don’t let uncertainty about your experience stop you from reaching out.
What does membership cost?
Dues are $75 per semester or $150 for the year. Scholarships are available for qualified singers who are financially unable to afford membership dues.
